ADAS features are already common in many new cars. They can warn of hazards ahead, help you save fuel and even help prevent drunk driving. Their contribution to road safety is likely to be so significant in the future that they are shaping road safety standards. While we might be a little way off from driving fully automated vehicles, these features are influencing driver acceptance of automation and transforming the driver experience.

What is ADAS technology?

ADAS might sound futuristic, but anyone who has driven a car made in the last 30 years will have benefited from the technology. It ranges from ABS brakes to ESP and traction control systems. At its most basic, ADAS can help with driver safety and makes driving easier. Some experts predict the ADAS market could grow by 29% by 2022, with global revenues of US$48 billion. ADAS is changing industry safety standards.
As with any new technology, it can take a while before regulation catches up with innovation. This blog post explains how HERE developed a patent for ADAS technology that could help the car “see around corners" in 1999. From there, the company decided to meet with other industry players to define safety standards across the industry. They created the ADASIS organization, an open forum dedicated to moving the car industry forward through ADAS features.
A new generation of ADAS mechanics is being created.
The car industry is changing. This is partly being fueled by ADAS systems, digitally connected car systems that can increase awareness, safety, and driver comfort. But ADAS cars also need repairs and maintenance just like cars of the past did, albeit of a very different kind. While the image of the mechanic of the past might be distinctly male, a garage in Irving, Texas, USA, is changing that. Finding out the speed limit is not always straightforward.
How many times have you struggled to find out what the speed limit is on a particular road? Even if you can clearly see a sign, the ideal speed can differ due to poor visibility, weather conditions, or other factors. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) is an ADAS feature that displays the speed limit whether there is a sign or not. It is hoped the tech will help reduce the number of crashes on the roads. Starting in July 2022, new vehicles introduced to market in Europe must have an ISA system fitted as part of a suite of new technologies designed to make the roads safer. This is going to be mandatory for every newly registered vehicle by July 2024.

Roads are getting more dangerous for pedestrians – but ADAS could be the answer.
The number of pedestrians and cyclists killed by cars at night is increasing, and nobody really understands why. It could be that there are more pedestrians and cyclists on our city streets than there used to be, or that large SUVs and trucks are better at protecting drivers and passengers than those around them. What are the ADAS features of tomorrow? As more of the driving tasks are taken over by the car itself, that leaves the way for yet more ADAS features to enhance the driving experience. Cars, vans and trucks are not the only vehicles to benefit from advances in the ADAS market. MV Agusta is a brand using HERE location technology to bring ADAS features to its motorbikes, aiming to make them safer to ride. Riders can control features such as the suspension through an app. They can even share their itineraries with other riders. Just as well since motorcycle use is growing all the time.
5G could help make roads safer.
Driver safety fears such as the dangers of distracted driving will be assuaged with the advent of 5G technology.
When combined with the speed and low latency of 5G technology, ADAS can do more than ever to keep road users safe. HERE has partnered with Vodafone Business and AWS to develop technology that will send alerts quickly to other road users when sensors spot an obstacle or danger.
It follows a partnership between HERE Technologies and Verizon which will power future developments in autonomous driving, thanks to 5G.
How can we prevent deaths and injuries due to drunk driving? It may seem incredible, but ADAS technology can play a part in this. ADAS technology is being introduced which could slow and even park the car where a drunk driver is detected. Cameras will look for pupil dilation while sensors in the steering wheel will assess the driver's reaction. Other sensors will monitor the movement of the car and the driver. This ADAS technology can help tackle drunk driving in a number of beneficial ways.
