Since its launch, we’ve provided various walkthroughs to help you get to grips with HERE for iOS, but delve a little deeper and you can get a lot more out of it than basic navigation.

Switch to HERE

If you attempt to open an address from your calendar, email or other apps, your iPhone will automatically open Apple Maps by default. It’s easy to switch to HERE for iOS though – when the destination has been entered in Apple Maps you’ll be offered three different options: Drive, Walk and Apps. All you need to do is tap on Apps, and then pick HERE.

Add your home and work to your Collections

For most people, the trip between home and office will be the most frequent journey they make, and it’s also one that can differ massively depending on traffic. It makes sense to keep tabs on what’s going on then, and HERE for iOS can help by predicting your arrival times. Make things even easier by adding your home and office locations to your Collections – simply enter the address, and when it shows up on the map, tap it and press ‘Collect’. Next time you use HERE for iOS, you’ll be able to pick it from your Collections – easy!

Transit updates and information

All you need to do is type in your destination, and HERE for iOS will bring up different types of navigation, including all the details you need to travel by public transit. When you select the transit option, HERE will provide everything from train and bus times, to the specific bus you need to catch, to the location you’ll leave from, along with turn-by-turn directions to actually get there. It’s even handy if you already know what bus you need, providing additional journey times and information. Want to know more? Check out our HERE transit walkthrough.

Share your location

Catching up with your friends? You can use HERE for iOS to let them know exactly where you’re going to be. All you need to do is tap and hold the destination on the map, and then tap the share button at the bottom of the screen. This will let you share using all the normal iPhone sharing channels such as email, social networks, messages, or even a Dropbox account.

Enjoy a different view

We all process information differently, and sometimes it can be tricky to get your head around certain maps, not least because the orientation doesn’t suit you. Thankfully it’s easy to change the orientation of the map, so the direction you need to keep heading in is always at the top. All you need to do is tap the green button at the bottom left to highlight your position, and then tap it a second time so it’s facing in the same direction as you. And if you don’t like that view, simply tap it a third time to head back to the previous view.

Day and night maps

If you find your eyes straining when using HERE for iOS, you may find it worth switching permanently to day or night mode. There are darker and more muted colours on offer for the night mode, while the day mode features brighter, more vibrant maps. To switch, tap Menu > Settings > Day/Night view, and pick the option that you’re most comfortable with. HERE for iOS can also automatically switch between the two modes according to the time of the day or night.
