We recently enhanced HERE Maps and HERE Transit with a bunch of new stuff that we’ll be writing more about in the coming weeks. First up is HERE Maps, to which we’ve now added a “collections” feature that’s handy for those of you with a large number of favourite places.

What this means in practice is that you can now organize your favourites into categories of your choice and synchronize them with other devices and These categories may be, for example, a particular city, restaurants you like, a certain kind of specialty stores you frequent, and so on. Each of these collections can then be sorted and viewed in different ways, which makes it much easier to find what you’re searching for. Let’s take a closer look…

When you open the latest version of HERE Maps for the first time, you’ll get a “what’s new” start screen informing you about the “collections” update. Just hit “start” and you’ll notice that the star icon at the bottom right of the screen is now marked “collections” (whereas previously it was “favourites”).

Hit the star, and then get started by selecting “make a collection”. Give you’re collection a name, save it and watch all your favourites getting downloaded to the newly created collection!

If you’ve been organizing your favourites into collections on before, you will find that all those will be automatically synchronised with your Windows Phone 8 smartphone. For others, most of your existing favourites will be automatically placed in the newly created “default” category that will appear on the collections page. To help you collect the places that matter to you, we have also included a “recent” category with all the places you’ve recently searched for and planned routes to.

Click to start organising

So now just click on any of your collections to start organizing your favourite places!

Now if your collection list looks anything like mine, you’ll have a loooooooooong bunch of favourites from all your travels on the page in a seemingly endless list. But fear not! You’re about to get all these ordered into some really neat collections.

Just click on the first item on your list and you’ll be taken to the “about” view, which now has a nifty new menu option of “manage collections”. Once you select this it’s easy to get things organized. Add your favourite places to existing collections, or create new collections by hitting the “+” sign at bottom. Note that you can add favourites to more than one collection at a time.

Filter your collections

When you are on a collection page, you’ll see there is a two-way arrow icon at the bottom of the screen. This gives you the option to filter all your favourites by:

  1. Name (the default alphabetical view)
  2. Distance (from your current location)
  3. City
  4. Category (streets, restaurants, shops, parks, etc.)

We suggest you just spend some time making collections that work for you and experiment with the different views to see what you like best. And don’t forget that you can then sync all of these new collections with (in much the same way as you could with favourites previously) so that you can access them from any device, anywhere!

Happy collecting! And please let us know what you think in the comments below.
